Plaza de España

Located between the historic Gran Vía and Calle Princesa, the Plaza de España is one of the main centers of the city and a place very frequented by tourists as well as locals.

The Plaza de España in Madrid has 36,900 square meters, which makes it one of the largest squares in Spain. It is a central and unique place, ideal to take nice photos of memories or relax contemplating the continuous movement of the city, as well as to choose from dozens of restaurants and shows nearby.

Points of interest

• Tower of Madrid: Built between 1954 and 1957 with 142 meters of height that made it the tallest building in Madrid at the time, the Tower of Madrid was for some years the tallest concrete building in the world.
• Spain Building: With a peculiar red-brick staggered front, the Spain Building has been presiding over the Plaza de España since 1953. After housing luxury apartments and houses as well as a shopping center, it is currently closed.
• Casa Gallardo: Located on the corner of Calle Ferraz, Casa Gallardo is an impressive modernist building built between 1909 and 1914. It is a building with a unique beauty that often goes unnoticed by passers-by who do not look towards Heights.
• Building of the Asturian Mining Company: Built between 1891 and 1899 for the Asturian Mining Company, this beautiful stone, brick and slate building crowned by three towers is one of the most beautiful in the area.
• Monument to Miguel de Cervantes: Inaugurated in 1929, the monument crowned by a ball of the world that is in the center of the square represents Cervantes with its two mythical personages, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

The square also has several gardens and during the summer months it is a real pleasure to be sheltered under the shade of its olive trees.
